IT Band Syndrome

Knee Pain

Iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome is a common injury seen in athletes, particularly runners. It is characterized by lateral knee pain and is thought to result from overuse and repetitive stress to the ITB, a thick band of fascia that runs along the outside of the thigh.

One proposed mechanism for ITB syndrome is tension distribution along the ITB, which can be affected by muscle imbalances in the hip, including weakness in the glutes and tightness in the tensor fasciae latae (TFL) muscle. When the TFL muscle is tight, it pulls on the ITB and causes increased tension, leading to irritation and pain at the knee.

As a sports rehab specialist, addressing these dysfunctions is crucial in managing ITB syndrome. This involves a combination of manual therapy techniques, such as soft tissue mobilization and stretching, to address any tightness in the TFL and surrounding muscles. Additionally, exercises to improve hip stability, glute activation, and core strength are also important in addressing the root cause of the issue and preventing recurrence.

By taking a holistic and evidence-based approach here at Apollo, we can effectively manage ITB syndrome and help our patients achieve good outcomes and return to their desired activities.
