Ligament sprains occur when there is excessive stretching or tearing of the ligaments that hold bones together at a joint. The severity of the injury will determine the course of treatment, but the principles of treatment often remain the same regardless of the body region affected.
In our practice, we use an evidence-based approach to treat ligament sprains. This means ditching the old method of RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), and adopting a more modern approach that prioritizes early movement integration and constant challenging of the patient, of course tailoring treatment based on the status of their recovery.
Our job as sports rehab specialists is to pull out every stop in order to maximize healing of the ligament while preventing any loss of function of the surrounding musculature and joints.
